News from the workshop

Good quality pocket watches are becoming harder to find. Whether this is because more people appreciate the extraordinary level of engineering design and workmanship and are collecting them for this reason, I am not convinced. To the average adult a pocket watch is a curiosity, rarely seen being worn, maybe found in an attic or at a car boot sale. The best pocket watches with gold cases fall victim to high gold bullion prices, so we are left with beautiful movements and no way to use them - how many car enthusiasts do you know who are happy to collect just the engines?

Pocket watches should be valued as examples of what could be achieved with less resources than we have today, but made with skills that are fast disappearing.

If you come across a fine example I am always interested in returning it to good use again.
